Anise Seed Pimpinella anisum

What makes the flavor of black licorice? Anise oil! Many love it, many don’t! Anise is used as a flavoring agent (traditionally used in biscotti recipes) and to stimulate digestion, making it a great warming carminative. Anise is prohibited to buy in France over the counter because of its high 95% anethol content, but instead used to flavor and add an extra relaxation effect in “Pastis”, a liqueur that is a mainstay aperitif in all of France. In Greece, this absinthe wannabe (anise) is used to flavor Ouzo. In Aromatherapy, we use Anise as an anti-spasmodic in menstrual cramp formulas, or to relieve any other kind of spasm along with lavender and Roman Chamomile. Add to Honey for tea, in candies or syrups, pancakes or anything you want a licorice flavor added to! Start with only 1 drop, this oil is very potent.

Add approximately 3-5 drops per pint of water throughout your day to assist liver detoxification (to help encourage weight loss), cleansing of the GI tract, and bringing radiance to the skin. Lemon essential oil consists of 68% d-Limonene, one of the most powerful antioxidants, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Lemon is very safe oil and suitable for children, adults, elderly and pregnancy. Lemon is applied to the skin to help improve the appearance of acne, oily complexion, cellulite and varicose veins. Lemon is best in a 5% dilution in a carrier such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, lavender oil, or lotion especially with children, pregnancy, elderly or dry and or sensitive skin. It is photosensitizing meaning that the area skin to which lemon is applied will be significantly more sensitive to the sunlight. Do not apply lemon essential oil before sunbathing. I know some who use this to their advantage by misting the hair with lemon for natural highlights.

Lemon essential oil is indicated for nightmares, skin care, varicose veins, cellulite treatment, brittle nails, nausea, air disinfectant. It is known to be anti depressant, astringent, circulatory stimulant and a tonic for increasing the tone and vitality of the skin and other tissues and organs of the body.

Lemon essential oil is filled with potent beneficial organic compounds known as monoterpenes especially Limonene. This compound is proven to be highly antioxidant, quickly absorbed by the skin and also drying to the skin. The essential oil also oxidizes when exposed to air, this is important as lemon and other citrus essential oils will be damaged by air and thus have a 1-2 year shelf life, much less than other types of essential oils.

In Ayurveda lemon essential oil is great in the Spring season. Spring is known as kapha season in Ayurveda which means that conditions are heavy and wet and that we can become lethargic and congested emotionally, physically and mentally. Lemon essential oil reduces kapha and all levels and brings lightness to body and mind.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine lemon is dry in nature and when used for cleaning or on the body as it helps to remove heat, dampness and phlegm.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) from Sri Lanka.

Veriditas Botanicals certified organic lemongrass essential oil has a lemony, spicy, citronella scent. Lemongrass is an unassuming aromatic perennial grass with powerful properties and health enhancing benefits. Lemongrass cleans the air, is antimicrobial, strengthens the tissues of the body and is detoxifying. This essential oil is perfect for household cleaners and an aromatherapy mist diffuser. Its lemony clean scent is enjoyable and creates and protective shield against airborne allergens which keeps sickness and bugs away. You can even plant lemongrass in your gardens throughout the United States to help repel bug and for cooking.

Lemongrass essential oil is high in organic compounds known as aldehydes which are some of the most aromatic molecules in essential oils and plants in general. This makes lemongrass a powerful oil which is best used diluted in a carrier for application to sensitive skin. Aldehydes are responsible for the smells like citronella which are calming and anti-inflammatory. It is most commonly used for its antimicrobial, antiseptic properties and analgesic or pain reducing abilities. It is also stimulating yet calms the nerves it is antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, immune stimulating and astringent. I apply this oil to sore muscles, joints, sprains and bruises. It can be helpful for the respiratory system and aids in relieving sinus congestion, and respiratory infection. Lemongrass is a powerful herbal remedy for skin conditions such as acne, athlete’s foot, and oily skin.

Lemongrass is used as a culinary herb in Asian foods and is also used in detoxifying and immune stimulating teas. I enjoy making Thai coconut soups and will add a single drop of Veriditas organic lemongrass essential oil for that wonderful lemongrass flavor. *Do not use non organic essential oils for food flavoring!

Lemongrass blends well with many oils and is often used in massage oil to relieve stress and tension. It blends well with the essential oils of basil, bergamot, clary sage, cypress, geranium rose, ginger, grapefruit, lemon, orange, patchouli, palmarosa, peppermint, tea tree, vetiver, ylang ylang.

In Ayurveda lemongrass is helpful for finding balance in spring as it reduces excess kapha. In other words, it helps reduce congestion in the body whether it’s in the emotions and thoughts or in the sinus and muscles. Lemongrass also supports the building of agni or the fire in the body. Agni is the heat of the body and it is metabolism, the digestive power and the purifying and detoxifying force with-in the body. Agni is often damped in spring due to windy, damp and heavy environmental conditions. Lemongrass is used traditionally in India for fighting fever and infectious illness as well as to calm the nervous system.

Traditional Chinese medicine uses lemongrass tea and essential oil to reduce phlegm and excess dampness in the body. Lemongrass essential oil achieves these feats because it has dry and warm qualities.

It is great for opening the sinuses and improving focus. The essential oil is immune stimulating and increases circulation to the area it’s applied. When added to salt scrubs, dry brush or massage oils it helps fight off illness. For a simple immune boosting treatment simply apply a few drops spread on the skin moments before jumping into the shower. This is perfect for households and individuals already suffering from the symptoms of colds and flues.

It blends well with eucalyptus, rosemary, Douglas fir, Scotch pine, cedar, juniper, lavender, lemon, lime. Niaouli has a medicinal scent which is not suitable for most perfumes, however, it is ideal for antiseptic, acne and upper respiratory blends.

Niaouli is a common tree found in Australia. It has a soft bark and pink heart wood with deep penetrating roots. It produces fragrant flowers and even the leaves themselves are anti-bacterial. The leaves have been used to help disinfect water and as an antibiotic for rheumatism, respiratory fevers and other ills. Niaouli is rich in the oxide 1,8 cineole and alcohols. 1,8 cineole is also found in rosemary, eucalyptus, ravintsara and many other essential oils with that specific cooling minty scent.

Orange Blossom Hydrosol (Citrus aurantium) from Cassablanca, Morocco:

Orange Blossom Hydrosol is one of the finest aromas on the planet. This hydrosol has a scent so amazing that it evades description; however, I will attempt to describe its brilliance as a perfectly balanced, flowery, orange sweetness. The Princess of Nerola, Italy had an obsession with Orange Blossom Hydrosol and used it to scent her regal attire and in her legendary baths. The scent became wildly popular amongst the elites and has since been known as Neroli. For hundreds of years Orange Blossom has been highly valued and is used in many of the world’s finest perfumes and colognes.

Orange Blossom Hydrosol is good for oily and mature skin. It is a natural astringent, anti-bacterial, which perfectly addresses oily, congested and blemished skin; promoting cellular regeneration, hydration and balanced skin tone. Orange Blossom Hydrosol reduces fine lines and wrinkles as well as hydrating the skin. It is mood enhancing, bright, stimulating yet centering for the mind. It can be used as an antiaging facial and skin toner, in mist diffusers, baths, homemade lotions and shampoos, as a gentle cleanser, perfume and in skin care.

True hydrosols are becoming increasingly rare as they will be organic, free of preservative and have no additives. It is a common mistake to assume that hydrosols are simply water with essential oils added this could not be further from reality. Orange Blossom Hydrosol is a product of distillation and there is nothing added to it. The scent and beneficial properties are infused into the water in the process of distillation. The beautiful flowers of the Bitter Orange Tree are delicately harvested and placed into the still. Steam passes through the flowers and condenses into a nearby chamber separating the fat soluble compounds into the essential oil and the water soluble compounds into the hydrosol. The hydrosol will have trace amounts of essential oil but will also contain water based compounds not present in the essential oil. Therefore, a hydrosol cannot be made at home by adding water and essential oil together; the hydrosol will have a unique chemistry relative to the essential oil. A trace amount of essential oil can be found with-in the hydrosol which enhances its amazing aroma.

Orange Blossom Hydrosol will be similar in scent to the essential oil known as Neroli, but with a much lighter aroma than the super potent essential oil. The Orange Blossom Hydrosol is non-toxic, safe for all populations and suitable for use in foods and drinks. Because the scent is so much lighter than the essential oil, hydrosols can be used in large quantities for luxurious baths, and a full body spray down. It is perfect for using on clothing as the scent will be with you as a sophisticated perfume or cologne which will not leave any grease or oil.

Aromatic hydrosols can add a great deal of depth to foods and drinks. Many gourmet and traditional ethnic foods use Rose or Orange Blossom Hydrosol. All hydrosols keep best when in a cool environment away from sunlight. It is safe to ingest but it is best to consume a maximum of one or two ounces at a time but keep in mind that a small amount of hydrosol will add a great deal of flavor. Orange Blossom Hydrosol is used primarily in traditional Middles Eastern cooking but it is also incredible in champagne, martinis, sorbet, flavored honey, lemonade, cakes, and more. It is best added when it will not be cooked or exposed to high heat.

Suggested Uses:

Facial toner:

After cleansing mist 3-6 time on the face then apply you serum or lotion. This will balance skin tone and texture, nourish, hydrate and refresh dry skin and repair mature skin decreasing irritation and fine lines.

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) from France

Veriditas organic Peppermint comes from the Diois Valley in Provence, France. see video here:

Peppermint is a supremely refreshing, minty delight with a cooling aroma and powerful benefits for the body. Peppermint is one of the best-selling essential oils and is found in many foods, soaps, cosmetics, tea and herbal remedies. It has a broad range of therapeutic uses as an effective pain reliever, reduces bloating, nausea and relieves congestion. It is stimulating for the mind and antidepressant. Peppermint is anti-viral and anti-fungal and also an insect repellant. Peppermint is one of the best-selling essential oils in the world and is found in many foods, teas, herbal formulations, bug sprays, soaps, cosmetics, muscle salves and more. As a small example Altoids, each one contain 2 drops of peppermint essential oil. (making them “curiously strong”!!!)

Peppermint is one of the best summer essential oils. Putting peppermint on the back of the neck instantly cools the body and keeps away bugs. It induces sweating (diaphoretic) which aids in the cooling of the body. Peppermint from Veriditas Botanicals is 100% food grade certified organic and can be used in drinks, foods and herbal blends as a flavoring with some desirable side effects. Peppermint is known for its ability to relieve nausea, gas, indigestion when taken in foods, inhaled or applied to the abdomen. It tastes great with a drop in water, lemon aid, mojitos, cookies and cakes, and more. To make a cooling spritzer just add peppermint to water in a spray bottle or better yet add it to the lavender hydrosol and spray on the skin to cool the body.

Peppermint is featured in many of the Veriditas Botanicals Wellness Formulations including Canker Sores, Mental Clarity, Pain Relief, Sinus Congestion, Bug Off Concentrate, Gingivitis Treatment and Gumdrops. As you can see peppermint is useful in a variety of different blends everything from oral health to mental clarity and pain relief. Peppermint has become a staple in toothpastes and has an affinity for oral health. It fights bacteria, odor, and yeast and decongests which is why it’s featured in the Gumdrops and Gingivitis Treatment. The Gumdrops, Gingivitis Treatment or peppermint be used on floss, toothbrushes and in mouthwash especially helpful after a onion filled lunch. It’s used in the Pain Relief blend for its analgesic (topically numbing), anti-inflammatory and circulatory benefits. It also acts as a driver to push the helichrysum, the other main component in this blend, deeper into the tissues for a deeper faster effect. The peppermint brings that cooling yet warming sensation on the skin drawing fresh blood and circulation to heal the area. Peppermint is also in our best best-selling blend, mental clarity, because of its ability to invigorate the mind, improve focus, memory and open the lungs and sinuses.

Peppermint acts in the body as a bronchial dilator and vasodilator, meaning that it “opens” up the lungs and veins, bringing more air in the lungs and more blood to the brain. Therefore, Peppermint acts as a great mental stimulant and is believed to improve memory. In Japan and Germany, Peppermint and Lemon oils are used in the workplace to increase efficiency and productivity! Therefore, Peppermint is a great remedy for sleepiness, fatigue, mental doldrums, a hangover, and even to keep you alert while driving

Peppermint blends well with many different essential oils and will always add a minty aroma which tingles in the nostril as it is inhaled. It blends well with eucalyptus, lemon, lavender, rosemary, spearmint, Wintergreen, grapefruit, palmarosa, ravintsara, and many more. The chemistry of peppermint reveals that menthol, an alcohol, is its main component which gives it its health benefits and minty aromatics.

Peppermint is used by many people undiluted with no troubles but often times these individuals who are familiar with essential oils and understand their sensitivity to the oils. For people who find peppermint to be too strong for direct application (children or elderly), Peppermint can be used in a 5-20% dilution in lavender, oils, lotions, etc.. For children seven and under and the frail elderly just 10-20 drops per ounce in a carrier oil is sufficient. If too much peppermint is applied to the skin it will feel very minty. If one does not enjoy this effect, apply a carrier oil to the area such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, even olive oil then wipe the area with a paper towel and the sensation will go away immidiatly.

Peppermint Recipes:

-To improve Mental Clarity, fatigue or stress add 2 drops Peppermint, 2 drops lemon, 2 drops basil and 2 drops rosemary to a small cloth. Place cloth close to nose and inhale 5 deep breaths.

For a more intense treatment:

  1. Place the Mental Clarity blend listed above into your hands.
  2. Rub together.
  3. Cup hands and cover nose.
  4. Breathe in five, deep breaths. After this inhalation, rub the oils on your hands to the back of your neck, on your shoulders and into the scalp. You will feel a wonderful sense of clarity and awaking.

Caution: Please do not get any oils near the eyes; if peppermint is rubbed onto the eyes put 1 Tablespoon of olive oil on a paper towel and rub peppermint with the olive oil.

-For pain relief, sore muscles or fresh bruises use 2 drops of peppermint on the skin. This may cause a burning sensation, so if you have sensitive skin, add 1 drop of peppermint to 1/4 cup of pure lotion, and then apply.

-For heartburn place 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil on hand and lick the drop of oil and drink a glass of water. Peppermint neutralizes stomach acid and therefore, works well for hyperacidity, gastric reflux, heartburn, etc.

There is much confusion between Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica) and Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora). These two plants are different trees all together and produce essential oils with different chemistry. Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora) which is available from Veriditas Botanicals contains more of a compound called 1,8 cineol, sabinene and a-terineol. You may recall that 1,8 cineol is a primary component of rosemary and has excellent properties for aiding respiratory health and the skin. Despite ravintsara’s botanical name it is very low in camphor and thus is non-toxic, non-irritant and does not cause harm to the body. The essential oil of ravintsara can be used internally for short periods of time to enhance flavor of natural herbal cold and flu syrups like elderberry and others and has an immune enhancing effect especially as an anti-viral. Ravensara (Ravensara aromatic) is used exclusively in Veriditas Botanicals wellness formulas specifically the Shingles Treatment and the Cold Sore Treatment.

In Ayurveda ravintsara is considered to be dry and light in nature and is great for reducing kapha type congestion which is especially prevalent in spring. It also enhances the immune system through building ojas which is the fuel which brings inner fire, energy, and healthy immunity.

Rosemary cineol (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. cineole) and Rosemary Verbenon (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. verbenone) from France

Rosemary essential oil has a refreshing, clean and vibrant herbaceous smell which is reminiscent of a beautiful garden. Rosemary has been associated with memory and love since the early days of the ancient Egypt. It is a familiar evergreen shrub which grows all over the world and loves coastal regions. It was known by the ancient Greeks as ‘dew of the sea’. Rosemary essential oil is used extensively for respiratory, memory, skin care and circulatory health. It has a widely loved scent which fills the air in the coastal cliffs of Italy and in magnificent herbal gardens around the world.

Rosemary essential oil has many uses and is in many of Veriditas Botanicals wellness formulas including: acne treatment, varicose vein treatment, mental clarity and sinus congestion. Rosemary essential oil is used alone and in blends to help the air pathways of the body function smoothly. This includes aiding in removal of excess mucus and allergens, opening the sinuses and lungs and helping with cold and flu. It brings additional clarity to the mind and has been highlighted for thousands of years for its memory improving power. It is great for reducing mental fatigue, improving focus, lifting vitality, and bringing additional circulation to the brain. It is great for studying, writing reports, doing research, yoga, athletics, and excellent safe option for anyone suffering from impaired memory and limited mental clarity.

Rosemary brings additional circulation to the area to which it’s applied especially to the localized skin. This makes rosemary essential oil a classic choice for helping with varicose veins, congested skin, cellulite, and areas of limited circulation or energetic stagnation. Rosemary essential oil known for use in hair treatments. It fights dandruff, greasy hair, stimulates the scalp for better chance of hair growth and is generally good for the hair and scalp. Rosemary is also great for aiding in reduction of muscular spasms, aches, pains, cramping, headaches, arthritis and rheumatic pains. Rosemary essential oil is used topically on the abdomen to reduce gas, constipation and to stimulate digestion.

Veriditas Botanicals is proud to offer two different 100% certified organic varieties of Rosemary, Rosemary cineol and Rosemary verbenone. These two varieties are the same genus, species and carry the same Latin binomial but are different chemotypes meaning that they are selected for their abundance of specific organic compounds in this case cineole or verbenone. The difference is clear when one takes time to enjoy their aromas them side by side; the cineol is more minty then the more herbaceous and fresh/ green verbenone. The cineol chemotype is more cooling and stimulating in scent and has an affinity for respiratory/ circulatory health; verbenone has some interesting ketones and is much better for skin care. Spacifically for reducing puffy eyes, and amazing skin tone regeneration and elasticity. Also, acting as a mucolytic in sinus and lung formulas.

Rosemary has a long history of use in food, medicine and sacred traditions. The early use of this herb was not in essential oil form but was as a whole herb which was burned in religious ceremony as an anti-microbial and scared incense. In the old days considerations of sanitation was much different then today and the burning of rosemary and other cleansing herbs was a way to prevent illness and provide a beautiful aromatic atmosphere. Rosemary was burned in the middle ages to prevent the spread of the plague and other illness. The essential oil of rosemary will have a more potent antimicrobial effect then the whole herb and thus we can get the same effect by using a few drops of rosemary essential oil in an aromatherapy diffuser. The herb of rosemary is still used in culinary arts worldwide and as a digestive and stimulant.

Rosemary essential oil is very safe and non-toxic and can be used diluted with children and the elderly. Looking through my resources some books state that it should not be used during pregnancy while other list it as safe for pregnancy. It should not be used with epileptics.

Rosemary essential oil blends well with peppermint, lavender, lemon, Douglas fir, Scotch pine, lemongrass, tea tree, helichrysum, eucalyptus, sandalwood, cedar, frankincense, myrrh and ravensara.

In Ayurveda rosemary is an excellent oil for finding balance during spring time as it deepens and improves breathing, is stimulating and decongesting for the skin, respiratory system, muscles and the mind. It reduces excess kapha which is the heavy and wet elements commonly encountered in spring time.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it empowers the mind known as ‘shen’ and works as a tonic for stimulating the flow of chi (life force energy) and blood. This is great for helping with stagnated chi, congestion and with cold achy joints.

Sage (Salvia officinalis) from France:

Sage has a familiar earthy aroma used in cooking and herbal healing. The name comes from the Latin word ‘salvare’ which means ‘to heal’ or ‘to save’. The Sage essential oil can be used as a strong respiratory antiseptic, air purifier, mucolytic, vulnerary, antimicrobial and supportive of women’s health. In blends it can slow excess perspiration, balance oily skin, and is good in foot baths and to treat oily hair. Sage is used in compresses, diffusers, massage oils, skin care, encourages inner focus, and grounding. Sage is used in the Cellulite Reduction and Scar Prevention and Treatment blends.

Sage is high in Ketones, so please use it highly diluted and responsibly.

Sage essential oil has several contraindications and is not safe for use in pregnancy, with young children or the elderly. Sage essential oil contains an organic compound known as thujone which is known to be toxic to the kidneys and nervous system when too much is used. Any individual prone to seizures or epilepsy or who is experiencing other nervous system disorders would be wise to avoid Sage essential oil and instead use the fresh or dried herb in teas and culinary preparations. Sage can also be drying or possibly irritating to the skin. Those with sensitive skin should use a 5% or less dilution (<30 drops per Oz.).

Sage has a long history of use as a medicinal and culinary herb. During the Renaissance Sage was used as a cure all and the herb was found in tea, food, incense, compresses, and baths to fight illness, boost immunity, decongestants, anti-inflammatory, and is an antioxidant. The historical records show that Greeks and Romans used it widely, considering Sage to be sacred for its healing properties.

Sage blends well with Eucalyptus Globulus, Cedar Atlas, Juniper Berry, Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, Ravinsara, Rosemary, Peppermint, Lavender, Bergamot and more. Generally when sage is used in a blend it is a minor note and only a small amount is used relative to the other oils in the blend.

Sage comes in many varieties, each one has a different Latin name. Clary Sage, White Sage and Sage are the most commonly seen in the essential oil market. Each one will have a unique scent and medicinal profile. Sage (Salvia officinalis) grows all over the world but much of it comes from Europe and Asia Minor. The leaves are harvest and distilled to produce the essential oil and hydrosol. Sage and Clary sage ARE COMPLETLY different in their chemistry – see chemistry chart on how to use.

Sinus Congestion

Have you been experiencing dry or congested nasal passages with the change of seasons?

I know I have and opening up a bottle of Sinus Congestion helped to bring me some much needed relief. My favorite method of using this oil is to directly apply it to the inside of my nostrils. Here is a description of my own personal experience.

I placed one drop of oil on each pinkie finger then massaged the oil into the interior of my unusually dry nostrils. I instantly felt a soothing gentle cooling sensation throughout my nose. The minty sweet scent lifted up into the front of my brain. I could feel it fill my lungs and exit my throat with a cooling exhale. On my inhale I experienced my heartbeat; I felt the oil was now circulating through my body. The intelligence of the plants and the body were working together to bring balance and health. I wait a few more breaths and begin to slide into a meditative state as I felt fully able breathe…

The organic essential oils in the Sinus Congestion blend are all respiratory, decongestant, heart opening and lung expanding; it deepens the breath and improves focus and concentration. Made from certified Organic Rosemary Verbenon, Eucalyptus Globulus, Peppermint, Inula, Olive Oil. Apply a drop of sinus congestion in each nostril before using the neti pot to drive the oil deep into the sinus to fight off bacteria and excess mucus. In preparation for yoga class, use Sinus Congestion to allow deep breaths bringing more oxygen to the lungs, muscles and improving concentration. Sinus Congestion can be used to mobilize our bodies healing intelligence before illness strikes and in the midst of a cold or flu. It can be applied to the chest and upper back, diffused in the air or inhaled. The essential oils are diluted in Olive Oil making it safe for use with children and undiluted use on the skin.

One can also put Our Sinus Congestion on the bridge of the nose to help stop snoring at night. Or on children’s chests when colds hit hard with a warm or cool compress.

Spike Lavender (Lavandula spica)

Spike Lavender essential oil is not the same plant as True Lavender. The Spike Lavender is more camphorous and more active on the skin then true Lavender. Spike Lavender is specifically for acne, oily skin, burns, promoting respiratory health and is great in massage oils to reduce neck and shoulder tension and headaches. The scent is similar to a blend of True Lavender with Rosemary ct. cineole as it has both the floral, clean, fresh notes like True Lavender and the earthy, minty aromas found in Rosemary. Spike Lavender can be used in bath, compress, diffusers, direct inhalation, massage and skin care. Spike Lavender is best avoided during pregnancy and is not suitable for use with infants.

ke Lavender grows in scrub land between 0 et 600 metres of altitue. It is a large plant with several branchings, each stalk bears many, small flowers. It reproduces itself by seeding. Little used in France because its fragrance is too strong (too camphorated), it does serve in Spain and Portugal as a thinner for oil paints and on porcelain.

Spike Lavender grows in the dry and harsh Spanish deserts. In order to protect itself from insects, infections, and attract pollinators it produces a unique essential oil suited for its environment. The hot and dry conditions make Spike Lavender produce and excrete an essential oil high in camphorous scents and cineole giving it similar scent to Rosemary. Spike Lavender neatly illustrates how climate and altitude can greatly affect the kind of essential oil plants produce to survive and protect themselves from predators and infections.

Spike Lavender is made through steam distillation of the flowering blossoms. The essential oil is light and clear to light yellow or green toned in color. The Spike Lavender has a mild risk for skin irritation and should not be used internally. True Lavender is much more gentle then Spike Lavender and the two are used for different purposes.

Spike Lavender is very nice in blends especially for the respiratory system. It blends well with Lavender, Rosemary, Eucalyptus Globulus, Eucalyptus Radiata, Sage, Clary Sage, Cedar Atlas, Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, Cypress, Frankincense. Spike Lavender makes a great addition to soaps, breath blends, shampoos, bug sprays, all purpose cleaners, in salt scrubs and more.

Sweet Lime from Mexico

Sweet lime has the unmistakable bright sunny citrus scent of lime. Lime essential oil comes from common limes which are used in cooking, drinks and more. Lime has many similar properties to lemon essential oil. It is anti-bacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-fungal. It is a great addition to household cleaners and body care products. It has a drying quality on the skin making it useful in acne blends similar to lemon. Like lemon it is a great mood lifter. The scent of lime essential oil brings a lightheartedness and sunshine into our lives. Lime is great of household diffusers as the scent brings a bright cheerful aroma and outlook as well as keeping you and the family more protected from unwelcome molds, fungi, bacteria and viruses.

Lime in non-toxic, but like other citrus oils used directly on the skin is NOT RECCOMENDED. DILUTE Lime to a 2-5% concentration in a carrier for use on the skin. Lime causes photosensitivity. This means when you apply it undiluted and go out into the sun, the sun may cause a burn that can scar. Please do not apply lime essential oil to sunscreens or apply to the skin within 4-8 hours of direct prolonged sun exposure.

The scent of lime is similar to yet very different from lemon. They share the same bright citrus scent and astringent feel to the skin and sinus but lime is distinct in scent. The lime essential oil blends well with lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen, sweet marjoram, ginger, lemongrass, palmarosa, basil, eucalyptus and more.

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides):

Vetiver is one of the most loved essential oils with a robust comforting earthy scent. It is often used in as a base note in perfuming especially in men’s colognes and floral perfumes. Vetiver can be used in aromatherapy for circulation and for comfort and grounding. Use Vetiver essential oil for meditation. a small dot of vetiver rubbed into the forehead calms the mind and brings us into the present. Vetiver is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing suitable for use with all populations remember to use a 0.5- 5% dilution (3-30 drops per ounce of carrier oil) with children, pregnancy and the elderly.

Vetiver is used in the Veriditas Sleep Aid and Men’s Deodorant from the Veriditas Botanicals line of time tested Wellness Formulas. Men’s deodorant kills the bacteria which cause odor and leaves that wonderful scent of vetiver which stays with you through the day. Many men and women have said that they use the so-called “Men’s deodorant” not just for stinky armpits, but as a perfume or cologne. In the Sleep Aid, Vetiver and the Spikenard help to sooth the mind and ground the body before sleep; the Vetiver also works to balance the blend with a deep earthy aroma.

Vetiver is a base note, so its evaporation rate is very slow. It “binds” to the other essential oils, making it stick around for 6-10 hours! (which is why it works on guys hairy armpits so well!)

Vetiver is so thick and viscous that we use a black glass application wand to get the oil out because the oil will not go thru a normal bottle dropper.

The essential oil is usually thick and sappy with a heavy aromatic profile. The thickness of the oil allows its fragrance to remain for much longer than other essential oils as it is slow to evaporate and absorb. Vetiver is often one of the thickest essential oils and also produces a lasting aroma. The heavy scent of vetiver changes and improves with aging! This is a good thing because a bottle of this potent thick oil lasts a long time! When using vetiver in blends just a few drops can fill the whole concoction with its rich earthy scent.

Vetiver is best known for its use in colognes, perfumes and cosmetics. Men’s cologne often employs vetiver as its base oil to “fix” a blend. The base oil in perfuming and blending refers to the essential oils with a heavier molecular weight and will stay aromatic after the light and volatile top notes have evaporated or absorbed. Vetiver blends well with many essential oils especially Lavender, Roses, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Frankincense, Bergamot, Douglas Fir, Scotch pine, Cypress, Atlas Cedar, Sandalwood, Sweet Orange, Grapefruit, Rose geranium and Patchouli.

Vetiver is a grass which forms a complex and dense system of roots which do not go especially deep into the soil. The roots are white to yellow eventually changing to reddish brown as it ages. The roots contain a small amount of essential oil and require a large quantity for commercial production. Vetiver is related to the citronella and lemongrass plants, it grows wild and is cultivated in India, Sri Lanka and Haiti. THE BEST AND ONLY VETIVER we use however is from El Salvador and is made by Nobbs Hydrofustion. See here for info.…/…/

The roots themselves take on a beautiful scent and in India the roots are dried and used to weave screens for window screens and mats. It has a great scent and also keeps away bugs and attracts prosperity. Vetiver is used to stop erosion of soil in many countries..

In Ayurveda Vetiver is said to cool pitta and calm vata. This means that it calms anger frustration and cools us in our heated moments and moods. Calming vata is way of saying that it calms anxiousness, anxiety, rapid thoughts. Vetiver is used across India in incense to promote a state of mind conducive to meditation and yoga practice.
